Privacy Policy

Overview
BreakAway ("we", "us", or "our") is a social platform for meeting people in real life through shared plans and activities. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect when you use BreakAway, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights. By creating an account or using BreakAway, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app. This policy is accessible at any time at https://gobreakaway.app/privacy.
What we collect
When you sign up and use BreakAway, we collect: • First name and date of birth • Profile photo • Gender • City and country • Email address • Phone number — only if you choose to add one from your account settings. We store it on our servers, it is not verified, and we do not currently use it to contact you • Your GPS location (while the app is active) • When you last opened the app • Plans and groups you create or join • Your UPI ID — only if you add one as a host to collect a plan's shared cost. It is stored with your profile and shown to people joining that plan; the payment itself moves directly between you and them, and we never receive, hold, or process it • A contact number or registration link you choose to add to a plan — optional, provided by you as the host, and shown publicly on that plan • An Instagram handle you choose to add — optional, shown on your profile to other users • Messages you send in plan chats • Access requests, your personal key, and keys or codes you redeem • Push notification tokens • App usage data — screens visited, actions taken, session replays (see Third-party services below)
How we use your data
We use your data to: • Once you say yes to showing on the map, show you on it to people in your city for 12 hours after you open the app: your friends see your pin, everyone else sees only a soft glow in your rough area (you can turn this off in Settings) • Show your social card and mood in Who's around to people in your city for 12 hours after you open the app (you can turn this off in Settings) • Match you with relevant plans and people around you • Enable chat in plans and groups • Send push notifications about activity relevant to you • Enforce safety rules, blocking, and reports • Understand how the app is used and improve it We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.
Third-party services
BreakAway uses the following third-party services that process your data: • Supabase (supabase.com) — database, authentication, and file storage. Your profile, messages, and media are stored on Supabase infrastructure hosted on AWS. Supabase is GDPR-compliant. • PostHog (posthog.com) — product analytics. PostHog records which screens you visit and actions you take. It may also capture session replays (recordings of how you interact with the app interface, such as taps and navigation), with sensitive inputs masked. This helps us improve the app. No payment data or passwords are captured. You can opt out by contacting us. • Expo / Expo Push Notifications (expo.dev) — used to deliver push notifications to your device. Your push token is stored and used solely for notification delivery. We do not share your data with any other third parties.
Location
BreakAway uses your device location to show you plans and people nearby. Once you say yes to showing on the map, people in your city can see you on it for 12 hours after you open the app: your friends see your pin, and everyone else sees only a soft glow in your rough area, in the colour of your mood if you picked one. It never shows your exact spot, just an approximate area. Others may also see how many people are out in your city. People in your city can also see you in Who's around (see below); it never shows where you are. Joining or creating a live plan can also let the people in that plan see you're nearby while it's on. You can turn off being shown on the map and in Who's around at any time in Settings: open Account settings, then Map visibility. Your exact GPS coordinates are never shared with other users — they only see that you're somewhere around, with a rough distance. Location is only used while the app is open. We do not track your location in the background. Location access is requested through your device's permission system. You can control or revoke it any time through your device settings.
Who can see your profile
Your profile is visible only to registered BreakAway users. It is not publicly searchable on the internet. On the map, for 12 hours after you open the app, your friends see your pin and can tap it to see your first name, profile photo, city, plan preferences, and what you're up for. Everyone else sees only a soft glow in your rough area, with no name or photo. While you have a mood on, people still using an older version of the app can also see your first name and photo. You can turn it off at any time in Settings: open Account settings, then Map visibility. Who's around: for 12 hours after you open the app, people in your city can see you in the Who's around list and open your social card (your first name, profile photo, age, city, interests, personality traits, bio, whether you're local or new to the city, and your mood if you picked one), and can wave at you. It never shows your location or how far away you are. People you block never see you. You can turn it off at any time in Settings: open Account settings, then Map visibility. When you wave at someone, they see your first name and can open your social card, even if you are hidden from Who's around. Your email address, exact location, and date of birth are never visible to other users.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored on Supabase infrastructure (AWS, us-east-1 region). Access is protected by row-level security policies — users can only access data they are explicitly permitted to view. Messages in plan chats are stored on our servers. We do not offer end-to-end encryption for in-app messages at this time. We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data, but no system is completely secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at gobreakaway.app@gmail.com.
Data retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account in-app or by emailing gobreakaway.app@gmail.com, your profile and live app data are removed from the app. Some backup or safety records may be retained for longer where required by law or for legitimate safety purposes.
Your rights
You have the right to: • Access the personal data we hold about you • Correct inaccurate data • Request deletion of your data • Object to or restrict how your data is used • Withdraw consent at any time (this will not affect prior processing) To delete your account, use the in-app delete account option or contact us at gobreakaway.app@gmail.com.
Children
BreakAway is for users aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we become aware that a user is under 18, their account will be removed and their data deleted. We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE). Our Child Safety Standards are published at https://gobreakaway.app/child-safety.
Governing law
This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of India, including the Information Technology Act, 2000 and applicable rules. Any disputes arising from this policy are subject to the jurisdiction of courts in India. If you access the app from outside India, you do so at your own risk and are responsible for complying with local laws.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. If we make significant changes, we will notify you in-app and update the effective date above. Continued use of BreakAway after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
